TWENTY-EIGHT

Ange stood alongside Jack in the Baia’s cockpit, both of them gazing ahead at the wrecked yacht and the activity surrounding it.

While she’d been pursuing the Blissful Dawn, Norman Lockhart, who’d still been flying beside the yacht, had given her the play by play. Had described the yacht’s stop, then its eventual turning around and full speed acceleration back to the northwest, heading in the direction it’d come.

Ange had spotted the vessel just as it reached the Abacos, along with the trio of RHIBs chasing it down. She’d seen it head toward the southern tip of Great Abaco. Watched as it collided full speed into the cliff, the whole vessel shuddering as its hull smashed in and fractured to pieces.

After observing the collision, she brought the Cessna down on the other side of the island and slid the floats right onto a small sandy beach. Quickly tying off the aircraft, she grabbed her gear from the backseat, jumped aboard the Baia, and Jack motored them around the island and straight toward the cove where the yacht had crashed.

“What’s the play here, Ange?” Jack said.

Ange didn’t need to give the question any thought. She’d been pursuing her abducted husband all day. Putting herself in her unknown enemies’ shoes. Solidifying her resolve regarding what she’d do when she found them.

By way of an answer, she set all of her gear beside the dinette and grabbed the large gun case. After taking a moment to survey the scene, she pointed off the port bow.

“Tuck into that corner of the cove, Jack,” she said. “And try and keep us steady there. Bow facing the action.”

Jack did as she said, motoring slowly along the rocky shore. Ange carried the hard case along the starboard side of the Baia and crouched on the bow. Opened the case and removed her Accuracy International sniper rifle. Unfolded the stock and extended its bipod’s legs. Attached a Vortex Razor scope then clicked in a full magazine and sprawled out on the fiberglass.

Her movements were orchestrated. She was efficient and smooth and methodical. Before her life in the Keys, before she’d married Logan and settled down, Ange had led a vastly different life than her present one. A skilled mercenary and assassin, Ange was one of the best snipers in the world. And the long range rifle felt more like an extension of her body than an instrument of warfare.

Using the firearm in her hands, she could discharge .338 Lapua magnum rounds from a thousand yards off and hit a human-sized target with relative ease. Settling into the bow, she had many factors stacked against her. Despite Jack’s efforts, the Baia still swayed a little. And it was dark, the only illumination provided by a waxing gibbous moon. But her targets were only five-hundred yards off at most. And she had the element of surprise. And she had five ten-round magazines packed with ammunition, so she wasn’t terribly concerned with perfect precision.

Inching forward, Ange poked the muzzle of her rifle over the edge of the bow, using the natural rise of the stagnant Baia as cover.
